The History of Our Company
The early days
We have been specialists in sleep and mattress sales in Turin for over 100 years.
Already in 1903, my great-grandfather used to work as a mattress maker and his
passion passed down over the years to my grandparents. At that time, the bed bases were made of wood, but the first metal nets, one of the Italian excellences in this field, already began to appear.
His professional figure was well known throughout the neighborhood, being a highly sought-after artisan for his skills. He used to be called directly to people’s homes, and his mattresses were authentic works of art, handmade with simple and functional tools which today may seem primordial to us, but that, with effort and sweat, allowed mattress makers to create durable products of fine workmanship.
The first workshop
Out of the creativity and artisanship of our family, in 1969 my father opened his first
shop in via Saorgio, where he made wools, fabrics, mattresses and quilts.
This is where I grew up: so many hours spent on the step in front of the entrance
playing and watching my parents at work. It was in these years that my passion for
this job emerged. I learnt the first rudiments in the field almost as a game, with the
innocence and light-heartedness only children have. Everything was new to me and
drew my attention: from the carding machine with its sharp and curved irons to the
wool so gently treated, soft and precious, from the hand-made seams to the cotton
tapes used to join the buttonholes applied to the surfaces of the mattresses to stop
the padding.
Several years have passed, but the memories are vivid and indelible in my mind.
The business
The beginning of our successful business reality dates back to 1980, the year in
which the commercial activity of selling mattresses arose in Turin.
From one generation to the next, we have handed down artisanship and technical
knowledge which, thanks to the advent of technology, allow us to offer a range of
products of the highest quality, ranging from mattresses to everything that makes
up a bed: structure, slats, nets, pillows and linen.
We started selling Permaflex, a historic Italian brand, but over time, our offer has
become much wider and more varied in terms of quality.
Strengthened by our experience and without forgetting the artisanal nature of our
profession, we have looked towards innovation and research with more confidence:
forgetting the past means having no future.
Innovation and expansion
The real turning point was in 2006, with the opening of the Cortassa store in Corso
Francia 21.
A store that moves with the times, where tradition and innovation coexist to strive
for excellence, care and well-being of our customers’ sleep: this has always been our company mission.
Constant growth
Year after year, we have reached today, the culmination of a dream: the Cortassa
store in via Pietro Micca 3 takes us to the core of Turin, in the beating heart of the
Piedmontese capital.
We are proud of our company history spanning over a century and at the same time we continuously evolve with a view to a global future, pursuing constant technical improvement without forgetting our artisanal nature.
A new challenge
in Dubai.
While 1903 marks the beginning of Cortassa Company’s history in Italy, 2022 is the date of the beginning of its expansion in the Middle East and more precisely in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. An important window on the world that certainly does not represent the culmination of our journey, but a starting point in extra-European countries. Precisely from the city that is identified as the myth par excellence in the world, the owners of Cortassa have decided to begin the expansion of their Brand, confident of exporting the best product in the sector in which they operate.
Why Dubai? Because it embraces our philosophy, being the multi-ethnic Emirati city, open to innovation, which in just over 50 years has been able to transform a fishing village into the most attractive city in the world. It moves at the lightning speed just as Cortassa does, because it is always in step with the times and often ahead of them, representing a leading Italian company among sleep specialists. As well as Dubai has no intention of being second to any city in the world, Cortassa represents an Italian excellence, based in Turin – Italy, but with a young and entrepreneurial mindset eager and sure to establish itself in Dubai by satisfying the demands of future customers and excelling on the other competitors. From a more personal point of view, the expansion of Cortassa in Dubai turns a sweet glance to the past and more precisely to those who created our company by carrying on our family dream.
The best way of honoring our predecessors is to work at local level with a borderless mindset. Today, after 119 years, the story continues…
